The guidelines, originally featured in her 2025 book of comedic essays, “I’ll Have What She’s Having,” quickly gained attention on social media, with several well-known celebrities applauding her practical approach to travel etiquette.

On July 22, Chelsea Handler reposted a letter from “I’ll Have What She’s Having” in a nine-slide Instagram carousel. Alongside the post, she wrote, “It’s family vacation season, which means it’s time to reread the rules. If you want to vacation with me, these are the rules.”

The comedian explained that the letter was written after a previous family vacation left her feeling “embarrassed and taken advantage of.” According to Handler, the trip revealed what she described as a “definite shortfall of manners,” prompting her to clearly outline the behavior she expects from everyone invited on future vacations.

One of the strongest messages in Handler’s letter centers on showing respect to every person involved in the trip. She stressed that family members should treat staff with courtesy, adding that everyone should “acknowledge their existence out of decency and respect.”

Handler also wrote, “I treat my employees like family, and I expect you to do the same.” The statement highlights that kindness should extend beyond relatives to include everyone who helps make the vacation possible.

Simple Etiquette Rules for a Better Trip

Handler also outlined everyday habits that she believes help create a smoother vacation experience. The expectations include avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, refraining from criticizing meals while eating them, and cleaning up after personal belongings rather than leaving the responsibility to others.

She also offered a practical example of shared responsibility by writing, “When I make a pitcher of margaritas, don’t finish that pitcher unless you’re willing to make another.” The message encourages equal participation rather than allowing one person to carry the workload.

Another important rule focuses on staying present. Handler recalled that one of the best memories from the trip was playing the game Oval Office together, using it as an example of why genuine participation matters more than distractions.
